A Rare Late Victorian Diamond Fringe Necklace
Silver-Topped Gold
Approximately 8–9 Carats of Old European and Old Mine-Cut Diamonds
Circa 1890
An exceptional and rare late Victorian diamond fringe necklace of impressive scale and refinement, executed in silver-topped gold and set throughout with a remarkable suite of old European and old mine-cut diamonds.
The composition is formed as an articulated foliate garland, suspending graduating diamond drops beneath a continuous diamond-set collar that extends elegantly along the neckline.
Diamond Composition
The necklace is estimated to contain approximately 8–9 carats of old-cut diamonds, arranged as follows:
-
Nine principal terminal drops, each estimated at approximately 0.20–0.25 carats
-
Approximately 10–12 secondary articulated drops, estimated at 0.12–0.15 carats each
-
A graduated series of square-set collar diamonds extending along both sides of the necklace, approximately 50–60 stones, each estimated at 0.05–0.07 carats
-
Additional accent stones throughout the foliate panels, contributing further to the cumulative weight
This extended articulation of diamonds beyond the central fringe materially increases both the aggregate carat weight and the visual presence of the piece, distinguishing it from more abbreviated examples of the period.
The diamonds exhibit the characteristic proportions of late nineteenth-century cutting, with elevated crowns, open culets, and a softer, romantic scintillation under natural light. The stones appear well matched for face-up colour and brightness, consistent with thoughtfully assembled antique jewellery of this quality.
